Youth Ministry Director

Position Description


  • Have a sincere Christian faith, proclaiming Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior.
  • Be courteous and respectful in working with youth, parents, staff and the congregation.
  • Seek to exemplify a Christian character in word and deed.
  • Provide leadership and vision in the development of a Youth Education ministry.
  • Relate well with Youth while displaying and teaching positive leadership skills and a servant attitude in the image of Jesus.
  • Display experience and ability in planning and implementing innovative ministries and projects.
  • Display a willingness to work with both professional and volunteer personnel.
  • Display a willingness to adjust/change ministries to position the church for future growth.
  • Display a willingness to attend workshops and training related to Youth Development.
  • Display a willingness to interface with committees to assist with program development.
  • Display a commitment to the Christian Education objectives of the UMC.
  • Display a commitment to the mission and vision of the Byron UMC.


  • Develop goals for the Youth program to support the Church Vision as reported to Church Council by the Pastor.
  • Establish and maintain regular communication with all the youth. Identify and assist, as possible, youth that could use a helping hand. This could be contact with you, a friend in youth, an adult volunteer or another member of staff.
  • Assess youth program needs and lead various youth committees develop programs to meet them.
  • Lead the development of new Youth programming implementing Wesleyan & UMC curriculum and theology where it fits our youth’s needs.
  • Monitor and develop the Youth Budget.
  • Approve/develop resource materials used in Youth ministries in consultation with the Pastor.
  • Meet regularly with the Pastor to coordinate goals and plans that support the vision of the Pastor as communicated to Church Council.
  • Report Youth activities regularly to Church Council.
  • Attend Sunday morning worship and special events related to Youth ministries at Byron UMC
  • Coordinate with the Christian Education Director to implement a full and supportive ministry for the youth of the church.
  • Follow Safe Sanctuary guidelines for classes, ministries, and activities to the best of your ability.
  • In case of absence, notify the pastor or church office.
  • Provide support for publicity, event planning, and web information on Youth activities as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned by pastor and in consultation with SPRC.
  • Use District and Conference connections to provide outlets for our youth that allow them to move beyond our church as God calls them.
  • Lead the following activities: Jr High UMYF (including mission trip), Sr. High UMYF (including Mission trip), Praise Band or Worship Experiences/pastor (including services), Senior High Sunday School, and Youth Lay Servants.
  • Lead, Guide and Assist Adult volunteers working with the youth so that they may be a positive influence on the youth.
  • Occasionally do Children’s talks, as requested.
  • Create the Monthly Newsletter which is sent out to families.
  • Coordinate Graduation Sunday activities. This includes Letters to parents, picture board at Church, Graduation Breakfast, Devotional Gifts and communication with the leaders of the SCHS Baccalaureate Service.



  • Church will assist with administrative support services.
  • Church will encourage training in Youth Ministries and provide funds up to amount budgeted.
  • Church will provide curriculum resources and equipment needed to perform the ministry.
  • Pastor and SPRC will provide prayer, support, evaluation, and a liaison for communication.



  • The Ministry Director is directly responsible to the pastor(s) for program design and guidance. The Ministry Director is also responsible for sharing information regarding ministerial activities with the staff and SPRC at an annual review or upon request.
